The software is different each year so you have to buy it again.

The major difference I’ve heard about the online and PC version is that the online version doesn’t show you what’s going on. In the PC-installed version, if I want to go see what form 6251 is doing, I go to the menu and click on show forms. In the web version, if it doesn’t print out when I’m done, it’s not there…. For a complicated return, this makes it very hard to debug.

PC-installed software is good for long, interrupted sessions. It’s great for doing what ifs. You can come back 3 years from now and see what you did. (I buy the software.)

I have been filing online for years without a single problem.
I have even gotten my refund back in one week.
The last couple years I found websites that allow you to file for free. They do charge like $10 or something if you e-file.
I used FreeTaxUSA.com and it really is free and never a problem.
There are several other sites that allow you to prepare your return for free. I just never had any problems, so I stuck with this one.
