whenever they don’t have what you reserved. If you reserve at the bottom end, it is highly likely you will get upgraded – not always but more than half the time in my experience. Often they will try to sell you the upgrade – don’t go for it – then they’ll give it to you for free. The reason people want the cheapest cars is fuel cost, rental cost and employer’s policies. Thus the rental car companies often run out, and have to upgrade.

The majority of car rental companies overbook on their smaller size car categories, because there are a lot of no shows. If they don’t have the size vehicle you reserved, they are required to give another car at no extra charge. (I agree, never take a sold upgrade!)

Often, what may happen is that the car rental company will not have booked all their larger vehicles in advance or they may get some last minute cancellations. They know that they have plenty of reservations for the smaller size vehicles and will have no problem getting them rented and paid for at full price. They would rather see the larger vehicle rented (even at a lower price) than have it sitting on the lot, earning them no money.

The thing with a free upgrade is, it may be likely, but you can never count on it as a guarantee. Book the size car you need! Consider the upgrade a bonus. And ask for a free upgrade at the counter, if it’s not offered. All they can say is no.
